Zero trust without the theater
Start with standing admin rights and how people sign in. The network diagram can wait.
Zero trust became a slogan you can buy. The version that changes risk is plainer: stop trusting a network location, and stop handing out permanent admin.
The first month is usually identity. Phishing-resistant sign-in for administrators. Privileged access that expires. A list of shared accounts with a retirement date. Joiner-mover-leaver tied to HR, including the contractor who left in March.
Microsegmentation and a new gateway matter later, on the paths that are actually dangerous. Doing them first produces a diagram and the same global admin password.
If a vendor’s first slide is a platform, ask who currently has standing rights. If nobody can answer, you are not ready for their platform.
