FinOps is a meeting, not a dashboard

The bill gets quieter when someone owns the five largest lines and sits with engineering every week. The tool is the easy part.

Most cloud cost programs start with a dashboard. They stall because a chart does not delete an idle cluster, and it does not tell a product owner that their feature is now the third line on the invoice.

A useful FinOps rhythm is small. Tag the estate well enough to group spend. Name an owner for each of the largest groups. Meet weekly for half an hour with three questions: what grew, what is idle, what commitment is now honest.

Commitments — savings plans, reserved capacity — come after the waste is visible. Buying a discount on waste is a common way to look busy.

Cloud Shastra runs this as an operating service, not a one-time cleanup. The first month is hygiene. The value is the sixth month, when the review is boring.
